Differentiating Curriculum and Assessment using Local (Singapore) Standards (2-Day Workshop)
Teachers have a wider range of students than ever before. Our students have marked differences in ability levels, readiness, interests, learning styles and language acquisition. How can teachers meet the needs of all students when those needs are so diverse? This workshop focuses on practical strategies showing the “how-to” of differentiation. We will examine several approaches to differentiation including:
1. Different ways to take in information
2. Differing amounts of time to complete work
3. Differences due to cultural background or language acquisition
4. Different levels of thinking, readiness, skills and/or ability
5. Different assignments
6. Different learning environments
7. Different means to assess what has been learned
If you need practical, user-friendly strategies to deal with the wide varieties of students you teach, this workshop is for you! Strategies include:
• Resident Expert
• Anchoring Activities
• Student choice activities
• Pre-assessment, Formative Assessment, Summative Assessment
• Criteria Cards
• Rubrics and Checklists
We will discuss when and how to use pre-assessment, formative assessment and summative assessment. We will compare and contrast the elements of standardized assessments and differentiated assessments and analyze the benefits of each in a differentiated classroom. You will learn how to develop and write assessment criteria, rubrics and about the many uses of criteria cards.
Throughout this workshop, we will see how these differentiated activities and assessments support Singapore’s Framework for 21st Century Competencies and Student Outcomes in the areas of:
• Civic Literacy
• Global Awareness
• Information Skills
• Subject disciplines
• Knowledge Skills
• Project Work
