Language, Literacy and Content: Developing Academic Oral Discourse Across the Curriculum

Language, Literacy and Content: Developing Academic Oral Discourse Across the Curriculum

Learning language, developing literacy and achieving in the content area are dependent on each other. Students need both language and literacy in order to be able to learn, read, write, and talk about grade-level content. And it’s difficult to develop skills in language and literacy without content to talk and read about. This interactive workshop will offer practical ideas and tools for designing lessons with meaningful opportunities for students to write, speak, read and listen in the content area.

Through video analysis, discussion and their own interaction, participants will learn about the key considerations in designing lessons that facilitate meaningful student-to-student interaction, provide both challenge and support, and develop high levels of language, literacy and content knowledge. These strategies include partner and small group structures that require students to use language to accomplish a task.

Participants will learn how they can:

  • Utilize numerous strategies to facilitate student-to-student interaction around academic content

  • Implement flexible, purposeful grouping configurations

  • Plan lessons that incorporate multiple opportunities for students to practice academic oral language

  • Plan lessons that develop oral language proficiency as a foundation for reading and writing and learning content
