Supporting Teachers to Thrive in Mixed-ability Classrooms by Differentiating the Curriculum

Workshop Overview

Teachers who are effectively using Differentiation in their classroom will understand that while they cannot change the school’s curriculum as mandated by the Ministry, success for all students relies on a flexible delivery of the curriculum.

Differentiation is recognising that in mixed-ability classes. Students can have very different:

  • Abilities

  • Learning styles

  • Backgrounds

  • Prior knowledge

  • Interests

  • Experiences and

  • Willingness to learn

Thus, whilst teachers (particularly secondary school teachers) may not be able to change the content as prescribed by the relevant syllabi, they have an enormous control in the way the present or package this content for their students. They can choose from six different learning and teaching strategies to deliver this contest as indicated in the Pirozzo’s Model. My model relies heavily on teachers’ willingness to adopt a multi-level delivery system in order to maximise every students’ learning potential.

By using the six teaching and learning strategies presented in this workshop, teachers will provide their students with various approaches to:

  • Learning the prescribed content by using their preferred learning styles

  • Choosing their preferred pathway to create their Real Assessment Tasks

  • Demonstrating what they have learned in a variety of exciting and engaging ways

  • Developing the skills to work in cooperation with their peers or by themselves

  • Reflecting and evaluating how they learn, how they retain learned information and

  • How they retrieve this knowledge when needed

The six teaching and learning strategies presented in this PD are:

  • Ability Grouping

  • Cooperative Learning Teams

  • Learning Contracts

  • Learning Centres

  • Multi-Age Groups and

  • Individual Learning Plans

During this workshop, teachers will be provided with useful examples of these six teaching and learning strategies.
